Chasing Ghosts

At Silk Laundry, we are continually inspired by nature’s hidden beauty. Our founder, Katie Kolodinski, has a lifelong passion for uncovering the delicate relationships that connect all living things. This curiosity forms the foundation of our Symbiotic collection, which delves into the intricate bonds between insects, flowers, and the environment.

During her research into rare and endangered flora, Katie came across the story of the Ghost Orchid, - a rare flower native to the swamps of Florida and Cuba. This flower, known for its delicate, ghost-like blooms, has long been a symbol of the fragility of nature. For years, it was thought to be extinct, but thanks to photographer Carlton Ward Jr., who spent three summers documenting the flower in its natural habitat, the Ghost Orchid is now at the centre of conservation efforts.

This rare flower is not only beautiful but also incredibly vulnerable. It thrives in isolated wetlands and depends entirely on a specific moth for pollination, showcasing the delicate balance of ecosystems. Listed as critically endangered on the IUCN Red List, the Ghost Orchid is protected by law, making it illegal to pick or uproot. Habitat loss and climate change remain significant threats to its survival, making its preservation an urgent priority.

The flower’s beauty - almost otherworldly - resonates deeply with the themes in Symbiotic, which highlights the hidden wonders of the natural world. To honor this incredible species, we’ve created a Ghost Orchid placement print, featured on two limited-edition pieces: the 1996 Dress and the Short Sleeve Boyfriend Shirt. These one-off designs are a subtle tribute to the Ghost Orchid’s rare beauty and a reminder of the importance of preserving species like it.

By sharing its story through our work, we hope to raise awareness and inspire others to learn more about conservation. Art, whether through photography, fashion, or design, can elevate these important conversations and shine a light on the species that need our attention most.

By featuring this incredible flower, we aim to spark meaningful conversations about conservation and celebrate the beauty of nature in all its forms.
